ARLO crafts sustainable buildings. Based in Melbourne and Kyneton, we are focused on sustainable residences, renovation, refurbishment, and adaptive re-use projects.
Founded in 2011, ARLO1 - Architecture & Landscape Office, has developed a reputation for thoughtfully designed, expertly crafted, and highly functional architecture. We provide architectural and landscape design services to help clients make the changes necessary to satisfy their brief, solve challenges, and realise the potential of existing spaces. Our projects have been recognised through multiple awards and publications including the 2020 Victorian Emerging Architect Prize from the Australian Institute of Architects.
Led by architect, Thom Mckenzie, we work in Central Victoria and Melbourne2. ARLO creates strong connections between occupants, architecture and landscape3.
We are mindful of the material resources used within a project to create sustainable, healthy, and durable architecture - applying expert knowledge of materials and construction to create elegantly crafted solutions to complex situations such as bushfire prone areas and the renovation of heritage buildings.
ARLO has experience working on a broad range of projects. Previously completed projects include hotels, holiday accommodation, apartments, theatres, alterations and additions to residences old and new, new residences, and work on heritage homes. ARLO is currently working on new build apartments and hotels in Australia and Indonesia.

1. Prior to 2024, ARLO was called Winwood Mckenzie Architecture. The reasons for the name change were three-fold.
Firstly, it was too long. Our previous name followed the typical naming convention of architectural practices that aligned the practice with the vision and creativity of the director. The nature of architectural practice and the methods available to communicate ideas have changed over the past two decades. Our name needed to represent the collaboration necessary to realise architectural projects and be able to be used across an array of media and platforms.
Secondly, The Winwood part caused confusion, suggesting there was another director when, in fact, the Winwood is part of my name and was chosen for its relative uniqueness.
Finally, our ever-evolving awareness of the relationship between our buildings and the immediate and broader landscape they inhabit and impact is central to our work as architects.
2. ARLO works on projects throughout Melbourne and Central Victoria. We have space to meet and work in Melbourne and Kyneton, allowing us to work effectively throughout Melbourne and Central Victoria.
3. In 2024, ARLO began collaborating with Woven Landscapes to design the gardens and landscapes surrounding and within the sites of our projects. Woven provides in-house garden design services to ensure external spaces and landscapes are considered at the early stages of the design.
