ARLO- Architecture and Landscape Office emerges as the new identity of Winwood McKenzie Architecture, marking a thoughtful evolution in our practice's journey. This transformation springs from two key realizations that reflect the changing nature of architectural practice since our studio was founded.
The shift to ARLO represents a deliberate move away from the traditional nomenclature of architecture firms, where practices were typically named after their directors. While this convention served its purpose, we recognized that modern architectural practice is based on effective collaboration and requires a name that can flow effortlessly across diverse communication channels. A long name presents a challenge to writers, graphic designers, and people trying to write down our old email address. The streamlined simplicity of ARLO better captures the collaborative spirit of our work while offering practical advantages in an age of digital communication and brand identity.
More profoundly, this evolution reflects our deepening understanding of architecture's relationship with landscape – both immediate and extended. We've come to appreciate how buildings exist within a complex web of environmental relationships, from the intimate connection with their immediate surroundings to the broader landscapes from which we source our materials. This heightened awareness has naturally led us to expand our expertise, bringing together architectural innovation with landscape design under the creative partnership of architect Thom McKenzie and garden designer Ellie Mucke.
At ARLO, we now offer a more comprehensive approach that weaves together architecture, landscape, and interior design. This integration allows us to craft spaces that respond more holistically to our clients' needs, creating environments that are not just beautiful and functional, but deeply connected to their natural context. Our commitment to sustainable design principles, technical excellence, and craftsmanship remains unwavering, as we continue to tackle complex challenges from heritage renovations to Passive House certification and bushfire-resilient design.
This new chapter builds upon our decade-plus legacy while embracing a future where architecture and landscape design work in harmony. We look forward to working with you to create enduring, sustainable, and deeply satisfying spaces for living and working.
