Renovating existing heritage homes brings with it the challenge of respecting the existing qualities of the original dwelling and complementing it with an addition that improves the overall outcome. The alterations and additions to the existing Victorian dwelling include a series of sensitive insertions into the existing residence to modify the existing functions of the rooms that were retained, and a new addition to suit the clients growing family - now and into the future.
The additions are a contemporary progression of the original built form rather than a contrasting form, building on an idea of the historical present. That is, heritage spaces that are considered contemporary spaces used for daily life rather than spaces that were used in the past. A focused attention to detail creates new elements that express the craft and material qualities of the original.
A primary goal of the project was to renovate and update the building services without detrimentally impacting the heritage values of the place. A simple rectilinear form allows for a focus on building performance, detail, and function - improving the existing built fabric and thermal performance of the new structure and providing a rich interior.
